On June 26, 2020, the government issued a notification introducing a new and simplified process for MSME registration, known as Udyam Registration. This new system officially came into effect on July 1, 2020, replacing the earlier methods such as MSME Registration, SME Registration, and Udyog Aadhaar Registration.
After completing the registration under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) category, businesses receive a Udyam Registration Certificate. This certificate contains a Unique Identification Number called the Udyam Registration Number (URN), which was earlier known as the Udyog Aadhaar Number (UAN).
When a business registers under Udyam, it is issued a unique identification number called the Udyam Registration Number (URN). This number is included in the Udyam Registration Certificate and serves as official proof of registration under the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
The URN is a 16-digit unique number assigned to each registered business. It is issued in accordance with the MSME Development Act, 2006, and confirms that your business is recognized as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise.
An Udyam Registration Number (URN) follows a specific structure to help identify the business and its location. Here's how it works:

Let’s break down the format:
UDYAM: The first five characters are always the same for every URN, indicating that the registration is under the Udyam system.
JH: The sixth and seventh characters represent the state code where the business is registered. For example, JH stands for Jharkhand.
00: The eighth and ninth digits are always zero in every URN.
0123456: The last seven digits are a unique identification number assigned to each registered business.
This format helps maintain uniformity and allows for easy tracking and verification of registered MSMEs.
